I'm kept pretty busy with the cat rescue my wife and I run. </span><span style="font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: small;">I'm still buying and selling on a smaller scale.By the end of the day, I just want to relax and chill out. That's when I start checking out some of my favourite blogs. I don't leave a lot of comments but just enjoy keeping up with things. In late September, Chris of <a href="https://fanofreds.blogspot.com/2021/02/an-interview-with-ryan-creator-of.html">Nacho Grande: A Baseball Card Blog</a> shared some sad news. Ryan R (</span></span><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: small; font-weight: normal;">roddster" in blog comments) passed away. You can read about his work and relationship with Chris in the above link. I had been a recipient in the past of some of Ryan's custom A & G minis. To honour his memory, Chris was sending out some of the cards to commenters. I just love the look and feel of them and wished to dd a few more to my collection.</span></h2><div><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: small; font-weight: normal;"><br /></span></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilKXqVA21Pv_P6Q4aUBrvM7agJVRRY-jSsN9MTmtTkQQc9WVOBPa0eSr5l3uVU5lD2WGhM9iQEqZzfJDeRsyKgq_pFJvHWmmfYaRM5IF6Ldk0qlyylgf7e9cCbDQK1qQQ1OTyJuZA3OM28nnkfc9eESbGjgnKURjQKRjjxeGpd2ME7oFG8wvOUfDeiccOf/s2808/cr.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2808" data-original-width="1811" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEilKXqVA21Pv_P6Q4aUBrvM7agJVRRY-jSsN9MTmtTkQQc9WVOBPa0eSr5l3uVU5lD2WGhM9iQEqZzfJDeRsyKgq_pFJvHWmmfYaRM5IF6Ldk0qlyylgf7e9cCbDQK1qQQ1OTyJuZA3OM28nnkfc9eESbGjgnKURjQKRjjxeGpd2ME7oFG8wvOUfDeiccOf/s320/cr.jpg" width="206" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggYldpW-1naIGdDwqkz9mdOwziivIgHPHulW_M2yclF8lzUNpLxZeEhNkG4s8ih_pKd2Ca1zGuY_XMUBcsv7vYq5YBN6TJ5jnVWIG1cByMi65-zlv2UX5BeGSdsD23uPywpgJxRQozCMyX91C0z7hhN0znYdf9vLuHcqHTKJzzTGMiILwJopxY8chtzVVp/s820/cr1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="820" data-original-width="435" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggYldpW-1naIGdDwqkz9mdOwziivIgHPHulW_M2yclF8lzUNpLxZeEhNkG4s8ih_pKd2Ca1zGuY_XMUBcsv7vYq5YBN6TJ5jnVWIG1cByMi65-zlv2UX5BeGSdsD23uPywpgJxRQozCMyX91C0z7hhN0znYdf9vLuHcqHTKJzzTGMiILwJopxY8chtzVVp/s320/cr1.jpg" width="170" /></a></div><br /><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: small; font-weight: normal;">And here they are in all their glory. Upper Deck's National Hockey Card Day 2023 took place on April 15. A departure this year was one set for both the Canadian and American markets. That meant a base set of 30 cards and 1 checklist instead of 2 sets of 15 plus the appropriate checklist. Since I don't have any LCS's, (usually pick up a set later at a garage sale etc), I went to my Toys R'Us to pick up the nine card sheets as I've done in the previous years. Looked sort of promising as the manager was wearing a Lightning jersey but saw no signage. I found out at customer service that their shipment was delayed and they would be getting them in "shortly". He said he could take my name and put a set together and call me to pickup when ready. I was in a few hours after store opening and was surprised to be third on the list. Thought there would have been more. A call came on Tuesday that it was ready. I went in Wednesday and they couldn't find my name on any of the sets put aside. Luckily there was still a lot of sheets left and was able to put together a couple of sets. You've probably seen the cards but here are the sheets in all of their glory. (front and back)</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEibhLxophJZyiZUPyKWqR9jzBLhwILYm8tDXKWQYQq7BiUPBLr4r5p81q3LdNXEZ-eTj2a_XEdz9JStWcG4d86826kT3zc2LSOEa5IZ5UfdAh4lLh2qSlwu842CseJ4GTF9ngIhtbzVMXNoN7iVVVGHjXPTTh120V3zBpVQY0EUInszzR3LWzuXqx2VYeOG" style="margin-left: 1em; Greetings from the Great White North. I'm late posting this mailday but what better day to get caught up.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><a href="http://pennysleevethoughts.blogspot.com/">Jon over at.A Penny sleeve For Your Thoughts</a> recently had some giveaways during his Take my Stuff Tuesday and Free stuff Friday. I was able to grab a few cards fitting my collecting needs. Correspondence was great as Jon informed me he would be sending by PWE and I was fine with that.<br /></span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">A few weeks later I came home to not one, not two but three PWE's all on the same day. He had mentioned he might find some other cards to send with my "winnings". </span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfitmJkkNxle3wWMUdvzt0DNbTojQUfBKyH-0mhKhysT0uH9o-L1t5YF8KyApq2wTRno9xYOCkKYvi1lYVywA-Tz2gvTIBCu0UbRHCD-fM8e0hOSbl-ZLqHi4oG0RAfTTEjlWAIRomeFW6IJsD8ryvz5KhWvEfFZKw0J2yYCGBD4jrdHFhLGmrv6451qJF/s3382/j.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2121" data-original-width="3382" height="201" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfitmJkkNxle3wWMUdvzt0DNbTojQUfBKyH-0mhKhysT0uH9o-L1t5YF8KyApq2wTRno9xYOCkKYvi1lYVywA-Tz2gvTIBCu0UbRHCD-fM8e0hOSbl-ZLqHi4oG0RAfTTEjlWAIRomeFW6IJsD8ryvz5KhWvEfFZKw0J2yYCGBD4jrdHFhLGmrv6451qJF/s320/j.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Envelope number 1 contained some Monkees cards, baseball (and Blue Jays content), hockey and 2011 ITG Canadiana. This would be Ontario, not France. We bring you some history of Paris native Charles Joseph Sylvanus Apps. (Jan 18 1915-Dec 24 1998). He was a pretty incredible man. He captained the Toronto Maple Leafs and won Stanley Cups. He won a gold medal in the British Empire Games (now Commonwealth Games). He represented Canada at the Olympics. He was a member of the provincial parliament. He's a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, Canadas Sports Hall of Fame and the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame. Is it any wonder the arena in Paris is named after him.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;">Here are some shots of the exterior and interior of the arena. Enjoy.</span></p><p><span style="font-family: arial;"><br /></span></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjZi1p5roG0p2jXKGymnHf3Pa29RvkziNSFPl-sjUT-GkM8-7voIaP262-TnJ78Gdkf7Dr5MV1wNJ1137LbSIj8x1tDRaXmGhmK6dMHLQatrvdsFs8ybZVwivMF0H9yZQ031oNSksD2e9ThwrXDO7UcepeAhATQJA7UU0MeVLfVeSo05vdfgXVtM9jiw/s3264/IMG_4517%5B1%5D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Hagersville was named to honour brothers Charles and David Hager in 1852. They had bought up most of the land in the area where a small village existed. It's located 94 km (58.4 miles) from Toronto. Population in 2016 was 2815. Just a little background before we get to the reason for this post.</p><p>This isn't about Neil Peart, best known as the drummer for Rush, born in Hagersville in 1952. </p><p class="has-text-align-center">No, the sign is out for </p><p class="has-text-align-center">3 time Olympic Gold Medalist and 4 time World Champion Becky Kellar.</p><div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter is-resized"><img alt="" height="432" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bvqMbyB3Wng/YMF5wWEi9kI/AAAAAAAAGKI/v5StzIJflKkZHXd-N3Uo7PFeszoNC1KswCLcBGAsYHQ/w425-h432/IMG_3888%255B1%255D.JPG" width="425" /></figure></div><p>She retired in 2010 and is now a motivational speaker and runs a hockey camp with former teammate Cheryl Pounder.</p><div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter is-resized"><img alt="" height="461" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9anQUuRgVB8/YMF5ctNhFKI/AAAAAAAAGKA/XwejxlPTNYEItdy9e_MdZP2r33TPWQQAQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG_3882%255B1%255D.JPG" width="346" /></figure></div><p>While there, had to stop at Timmies to get my double double. (my fellow Canadians will understand this) This particular store had the Tim Horton picture in the window by the entrance door. (notice the hockey stick shaped door handles) The colour bars in the bottom right corner is a timeline for the teams he played for. St Michaels Majors, Pittsburgh Hornets, Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres.</p><div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter is-resized"><img alt="May be an image of nature and ocean" height="703" src="https://scontent.fymy1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.6435-9/196530858_4094532370611985_6476166090179742534_n.jpg?_nc_cat=104&ccb=1-3&_nc_sid=730e14&_nc_ohc=6idn-S3QyjQAX813Y-7&_nc_ht=scontent.fymy1-1.fna&oh=b4819349b625dd8516c5de0a4bf2c682&oe=60E7B80A" width="414" /></figure></div><p class="has-text-align-center">Then it was off for a little relaxation.</p><p></p><p><!-- wp:paragraph -->

Some used a wheelbarrow, hoses and squeegees to flood the ice surface. Others made their own contraptions to water the ice. This was a very time consuming process. Frank Zamboni owned a skating rink and the length of time to resurface would cut into their profits.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">90/91 Upper Deck # 549</span></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pn6CtbmaDuA/YK56F3DKOsI/AAAAAAAAGIw/-rYaqjT7TUU9iFzFBjLicD465z8OdN2dACLcBGAsYHQ/s1013/scan_20210525152509%2B%25282%2529.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="723" data-original-width="1013" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pn6CtbmaDuA/YK56F3DKOsI/AAAAAAAAGIw/-rYaqjT7TUU9iFzFBjLicD465z8OdN2dACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/scan_20210525152509%2B%25282%2529.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CPHCEDlsqjw/YK56IBYFVoI/AAAAAAAAGI0/L9qQAo8zEagjtxFGGvqJMyV1FtSxSRyFgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1017/scan_20210525152541%2B%25282%2529.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1017" data-original-width="721" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CPHCEDlsqjw/YK56IBYFVoI/AAAAAAAAGI0/L9qQAo8zEagjtxFGGvqJMyV1FtSxSRyFgCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/scan_20210525152541%2B%25282%2529.jpg" /></a> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">With a background in refrigeration and cooling, he set about to build a better mouse trap. His first prototype was a tractor towing a machine which attempted to sweep the ice shavings. Unfortunately, it proved unreliable. He tinkered with this from 1942 to 1947 but could not come up with anything to suit his needs. He then started with a new blueprint, to combine the tractor and trailer into one machine. A few more years of modifying the machine ensued, and in 1949, he had built the Zamboni ice resurfacer which is pretty much what is in use today. It made its NHL debut on March 10 1955 in Montreal.</span></div><div><br /></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bn9StSEBNCo/YK56Q3KtesI/AAAAAAAAGI8/iM6chQNgqSU_cwpdvdTjnG2s-hUbbHJ7ACLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG_3855%255B1%255D.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bn9StSEBNCo/YK56Q3KtesI/AAAAAAAAGI8/iM6chQNgqSU_cwpdvdTjnG2s-hUbbHJ7ACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG_3855%255B1%255D.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CT3RquDyagc/YK56ZamPUOI/AAAAAAAAGJI/4ROz-zjwcL4s3jmoZtO9y7nCxt2NavzywCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG_3856%255B1%255D.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CT3RquDyagc/YK56ZamPUOI/AAAAAAAAGJI/4ROz-zjwcL4s3jmoZtO9y7nCxt2NavzywCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG_3856%255B1%255D.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: arial; font-size: medium;">Here's a view of the Zamboni plant in Brantford. Price has now increased to $1.49 each. I picked up these two packs. I honestly do not remember these 2005-06 Upper Deck Rookie update is an Upper Deck product released to deal with the double rookie class. It adds to several different products ( Artifacts, Black Diamond, SP Game Used etc). It adds as many as 100 rookies to some products as well as provides its own unique set of cards, that includes rookies, memorabilia and autograph cards. That's how long ago my last post on my blog was. I have been reading all of my favourite blogs and following on social media (FB, Twitter, IG). Seems like I don't have enough hours in the day or the energy to post. The past year has been really busy in my life. The cat rescue (<a href="https://heartstohomes.ca/" rel="nofollow">Hearts to Homes Feline Rescue & Sanctuary</a> that my wife and I run has engulfed us. The past year has been our busiest, mostly due to COVID. It's been a balancing act as there were more cats in need and our fundraisers were diminished or cancelled completely. That's what I've been doing. In the hockey card vein, I've been selling a lot of 90's junk was era stuff. Last year I couldn't give it away. This year, most of it goes within a couple of days. Whatever the reason, I'm taking advantage before the bubble bursts. One more in my recurring series, Oot and Aboot.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2E705__TpLo/YE57CHRoxOI/AAAAAAAAGDo/fQRMrLhcPQYsh2jf4TsA9NVVqWMSV5NawCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/da.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2E705__TpLo/YE57CHRoxOI/AAAAAAAAGDo/fQRMrLhcPQYsh2jf4TsA9NVVqWMSV5NawCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/da.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">What's that you may ask. I'm back with another fight photo from my collection. This one from Jan 16, 1989 when the Edmonton Oilers and Chicago Blackhawks tied 2-2. It's kind of neat that you can pinpoint about when the photo was taken. Penalties 5 min each for fighting at 8:28 of the first period.<br />

This year, there was an open call to anyone to choose a team to receive cards of.</div>

So far, it seems like I've been on an extended summer holiday. I've been able to devote more time to our <a href="https://heartstohomes.ca/">cat rescue</a>. This summer has been extremely busy with kittens. It's so overwhelming that some days I wish I was back working again. But, I've been able to catch up on a few things (besides, yard work and the daily mundane chores). I<i>'</i>ve been able to start inventorying my card collection so I can see what I have. I've also made some trades and sold a few things. One thing that will stay with me is my retirement gift. Yeah, no watch for me. Since I was known as a hockey fan (read Leafs fan) and autograph collector, they thought this would be an appropriate gift.<br />

Framed 100 Greatest Leafs poster signed by Killer, The China Wall and Ronnie the Robot. It's now hanging in the man cave. This was a big surprise and was touched by the sentiment and thoughtfulness of the gift. Now for one of the other perks to kick in. Nap time in the afternoon. </div>

<br />
The first if from July 1, 2019. Tennessee Titan's OL Austin Pasztor was holding his second football camp here in Brantford. My friend Dennis was able to obtain Austin's signature for me.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I didn;t realize this one was from March 29 2019. The Brantford Home Builders Association was holding it\s 32nd luncheon and <span style="text-align: center;">the keynote speaker was Roberto Alomar. This was on a Friday at noon hour and I wasn't able to go. Enter Dennis. I let him know about this and discovered he didn't know about it. He was able to attend and got me this signed photo.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;">It's nice having someone in the city who collects autographs and can do the IP part for me.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: center;">The next opportunity here is on August 14th. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/hockeynightinbrantford/">Hockey Night in Brantford-Encore Game</a>. I should be able to meet up with Dennis there and get my own. Hopefully I get some good stuff that I\ll be able to share here.</span></div>
