Edmonton's Wayne Gretzky scored his 23rd career hat trick and added two assists, and Jari Kurri had two goals and two assists as the Oilers won 7-4 against the visiting Winnipeg Jets. Andy Moog picked up his 50th career victory in the game.
December 18 Paul Coffey scored a goal and two assists to become the third defenseman in NHL history to score 700 career assists. The three points came in a 9-2 Penguins win over the Winnipeg Jets, at the Civic Arena.
Dave Lumley scored 2 goals and 2 assists to extend his goal scoring streak to 12 consecutive games, in a 7-4 Oilers' win over the Rockies, at Colorado. His streak was second only to Charlie Simmer who held the "modern" NHL record of 13 straight.
Winnipeg's Peter Sullivan set a Jets' team record with three assists in one period (the third) in a 6-2 win over the visiting Montreal Canadiens. Sullivan had a total of five points in the game - a goal and four assists.

Calle Johansson picked up two assists to become the Washington Capitals all-time leader in assists by a defenseman, in a 3-2 win over the visiting Boston Bruins. Johansson broke the mark of 331 set by Scott Stevens.
