Drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the 8th round (167th overall) of the  1980 NHL Entry Draft. He felt he had a great deal to prove when he was selected in the eighth round, 167th overall, in the 1980 Entry Draft by the Buffalo Sabres. He was convinced he should have been chosen much higher and knew that a successful NHL career would be proper vindication.

Dustin Boyd scored the overtime winner six seconds into the third extra frame to end the AHL’s longest Game 7 in its 75-year history.  The Bulldogs move on to the Western Conference final against the winner of Tuesday’s Game 7 between Houston and Milwaukee.
