July 7--Ed Staniowski

Ed Staniowski

Selected by St. Louis Blues, round 2 #27 overall in the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft.
Selected by Cleveland Crusaders, round 3 #35 overall in the 1975 WHA Amateur Draft.

Staniowski led the Regina Pats to the 1974 Memorial Cup and was named to the WCJHL first all-star team and voted the Canadian Major Junior player of the year.
Over the next six years Staniowski showed flashes of brilliance but was chiefly a solid back up on an inconsistent defensive team in St. Louis. He also spent time in the minors and shared the Terry Sawchuk trophy with Doug Grant in 1978 for allowing the fewest goals in the CHL.
In July, 1981 Staniowski was sent to the Jets along with Paul MacLean. He won 20 games and helped Winnipeg reach the playoffs but he started battling injuries and consistency. He was traded to the Hartford Whalers in 1983 for fellow back up Mike Veisor and retired in 1985.
After retiring, Staniowski joined the Canadian Forces Primary Reserves. He has worked his way up through the Canadian Air Force and is currently a Lieutenant Colonel. He has deployed for his country numerous times, including as the senior Canadian advisor to the Armed Forces of Sierra Leone

July 6--Ron Duguay

Ron Duguay

Selected by New York Rangers, round 1 #13 overall in the 1977 NHL Amateur Draft.
Selected by Winnipeg Jets,  round 1 #3 overall in the 1977 WHA Amateur Draft.
With his long flowing hair and natural good looks, Duguay was a smash hit with the young females on Broadway and the men liked him because he was an excellent hockey player. In his rookie season with the Rangers, Duguay netted 20 goals and assisted on 20 others in the 1977-78 season.

In 2009, Duguay was ranked No. 49 on the all-time list of New York Rangers in the book 100 Ranger Greats

Received this blue ink signed card IP. This was during one of Wayne Gretzky's Celebrity Tennis Tournaments in the 80's. They had tables set up outdoors and various celebrities rotated through and signed autographs. I was in a short line for Duguay. He was smiling before I handed him the card but he took one look and did not seem pleased. He was telling me that it was part of the rookie hazing. I said something to the fact that his hair had grown out fine. It's always nice to have a little anecdote to go with the card. There was also a rumour about some fight with Lafleur involving Cheryl Tiegs. I could not get it confirmed but the story was flying around the Sunday morning.

July 5--Doug Wilson

Doug Wilson

Selected in round 1 #6 overall, Chicago Blackhawks in the 1977 NHL Amateur Draft.
Selected in round 1 #5 overall, Indianapolis Racers in the 1977 WHA Amateur Draft.
Wilson made the Hawks' starting lineup in his first training camp as an 18-year-old. As he got to be a veteran in the league, he became more interested in the business of the game. After 1985 he was one of the vice-presidents of the NHL Players' Association, and when President Bryan Trottier joined the Islanders' executive in 1992, Wilson was named the NHLPA's new president at a critical time in league history. After 14 years with Chicago, Wilson was traded to the expansion San Jose Sharks in 1991, a move he looked forward to as a time to teach young players and enjoy the game in a non-hockey market. After two part-time years on defense, he retired and moved into the front office with the Sharks.

July 4--Pat Stapleton

Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the USA commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence  on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the kingdom of Great Britain.

Happy birthday to my neighbours to the south.
Pat Stapleton

Stapleton had signed with the Chicago Blackhawks, but was claimed by the Boston Bruins in the intra-league draft in June 1961.

Pat teamed with Bill White in Chicago to form one of the premier defense partnerships in the NHL. The Hawks won 4 consecutive West Division championships with Pat and Bill anchoring the blueline – Pat the offensive player and Bill the stay-at-home man. Pat topped out at 54 point in the 1966-67 season, a great offensive output for that era. He was a Second Team All Star three times in 1966, 1971 and 1972.

Whitey Stapleton left hockey in 1978 after scoring 337 points in the NHL and 238 in the WHA.

He is represented by Sports Celebrity Marketing.

July3--Dave Lewis

Dave Lewis

Selected by New York Islanders, round 3 #33 overall in the 1973 NHL Amateur Draft.
Selected by Alberta oilers,  round 3 #32 overall in the 1973 WHA Amateur Draft.
Defenceman Dave Lewis was a tower of strength in his own end and moved the puck over to his more talented teammates effectively during his 15 years in the NHL. He was an important member of the New York Islanders when they became competitive in the 1970s and later helped solidify the blueline on three other teams.
A few weeks before New York launched its Stanley Cup dynasty, Lewis was sent with Billy Harris to the Los Angeles Kings for Butch Goring. He was an important defensive component on a club which had a host of offensive-minded forwards. In 1982, Lewis was a member of the plucky squad that upset the heavily favoured Edmonton Oilers in the first round.
Lewis joined the young New Jersey Devils for three seasons beginning in 1983-84. He was signed as a free agent by the Detroit Red Wings in 1986 and helped the club reach the semi-finals that spring. He retired after playing six games for the Wings in 1987-88.
On June 7, 2011, Lewis was hired as the assistant coach of the Carolina Hurricanes

Received these blue ink signed cards TTM. (he signed the last two Detroit Red Wings cards with red marker). Like the Steve Shutt one a few days ago, I tried to get one of each different players card signed. I can't see doing that today, sending 13 or 20 cards to be signed. Those were the days.

July 2--Paul Lawless

Paul Lawless

Selected in first round by Hartford Whalers, number 14 overall in the 1982 NHL Draft.

After playing 47 games for Hartford in 1982-83, he struggled the next year and was returned to junior where he earned a spot on the league's second all-star team. By the mid-'80s, he was a solid role player on the improved Whalers and scored 22 goals when the club finished first in the Adams Division in 1986-87.
Lawless lost his place in the line-up early in 1987-88 and ended up skating for the Philadelphia Flyers and Vancouver Canucks before the season was over. He was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in February 1989 but played only a handful of games for his hometown club. In the early '90s, he tried his luck in Switzerland, Italy, and Austria before returning to North America. He spent parts of five seasons in the IHL with the Cincinnati Cyclones and topped the 20-goal mark four straight years. Lawless retired in 1998 after playing one contest for the Austin Ice Bats of the Western Pro League.

Blue ink signed card. Can't remember if this was IP or TTM.

Posting these cards has brought back a lot of memories. I have star autos but a lot of scrubs. Seeing this card, I now remember the Cooper-alls Hartford wore. I was also thinking, didn't Paul play for Toronto. Indeed he did. Maybe reading some of my posts will bring back memories or maybe you will learn something you didn;t know. At any rate, I'm having fun.
