Another month down in this continuing series. An autographed card from my collection to highlight a happening in NHL history. 144/146 so far since I started. September looms as training camps will be starting up.

And today I'm going to a baseball game with my daughters.  But not just any old game. Your Toronto Blue Jays vs the New York Yankees. Derek Jeter's last game in Toronto. Also happening in Toronto, Fan Expo (The Two  Captains scheduled for today--Patrick Stewart and William Shatner) And what is Toronto without the annual CNE. It's going to be busy in Toronto . Go Jays Go. Let's hope we're Happ(y) after the game.

This Day in NHL History 1994 Aug 19

Late posting todays segment. Rogers service was down. No phone, no TV and no internet connection. One bonus was a short work day. Since I work from home, I need internet. Couldn't go into the office as someone had to be here to talk to the service guys. They're doing some road construction about a kilometer away. Cut the trunk line and there were outages here and there in the area. Problem fixed. End result--me working about 2 1/2 hrs today

So, without further ado,

Another item from the Flashback column in the local paper.

50 years ago 1964
The Big Chief of hockey, George Armstrong, captain of Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team, was presented with a lacrosse stick at the Ohsweken Community Hall by Norman Thomas on behalf of the Six Nations elected council. Mr. Armstrong's visit was part of a tour of reserves across Ontario, sponsored by the Ontario department of lands and forests.

IP Success Aug 17

Despite my problems in not attending Hockey Night in Brantford and not getting some autographs, I did manage to have success yesterday.
As any of my followers that do hound know, you have to keep your ears and eyes open for those opportunities. On Friday, I saw this ad in The Hamilton Spectator.

Now Hamilton is a short distance away (44 km/27 miles). My mother in Hamilton has been a long time subscriber to the paper and each year at Christmas, they allow you to name someone to receive a free one year subscription. So, along with the local paper, I can see whats happening elsewhere (hello Hamilton Bulldogs). This innocuous little ad at the bottom of the sports section did catch my attention. An appearance by Cam Talbot, NYR backup goalie at ON ICE Goaltending School.

I did a quick search and didn't find any cards of his that I had. It was time for my old friend Google to help me. Found some images and printed up some 4 x 6 's to get signed. I got there a little later than 11:00 and went to the room where he was. It appears he gave a clinic in the morning and the participants and their parents were talking to him and asking questions. Some were tips regarding on-ice  play (see how I worked the name in here) and some off-ice questions. A few things I learned about him.

He grew up a Montreal Canadiens and Patrick Roy fan.
His wife is from Dallas but they have bought a home in this area.
He started playing organized hockey around the age of 7 and didn't become a full time goaltender until the age of 10.

There was around 15-20 people there, parents and kids. Some of them already had mini-sticks, pictures and jerseys/hats signed. After about an hour, the crowd dwindled down and I got these signed.

He was kind of impressed that I made these up. He had also brought with him his pads, gloves and the Stadium Series mask that I had printed up. He was great with the kids , even trying to coax the shy ones to ask questions. Awesome time and I was glad to snag some signatures for my ever growing collection.  Wonder when the next chance will appear.

Hockey Night in Brantford

Last night was.the third annual edition of this event. I was hoping to post some autograph successes here this morning. Due to unforeseen circumstances (hello work related issues), I was not able to attend. They did raise over $100000.00 for the United Way. Hopefully I can attend next years event.

This Day in NHL History Aug 7

I don't have any cards to post today. So early in the month. Outlook not looking bright.

So

ramble on, and now's the time, the time is now, to sing my song

My predictions for the Stanley Cup visits in this area were accurate.

Nelson Emerson  John Stevens  Rob Blake  Jake Muzzin  Brandon Nolan

These were just some of the places within an hour of where I live. I was away on holidays during these time frame. Lot of autograph opportunities missed.  Well, if the Kings can win again in the next few years, maybe a repeat tour through this area.

Fingers crossed buddy icon

And now, to update this years Hockey Night in Brantford game.

I missed the first year of this event but made it to last years. You can read my adventures here.
This year doesn't have as many former NHL'ers but it's all for the United Way, so I can't complain.

Any maybe, just maybe Alan Thicke will bring his wife

This Day in NHL History 1997 Aug 6 Switched at birth

August 06
 Deja vu??

The Nashville expansion team (scheduled to begin play in 14 months) named Barry Trotz as their first head coach, and Paul Gardner as his assistant.

I wanted to try and do this so I wouldn't duplicate any autographed cards. Not from an earlier entry or from my birthday project post of a couple of years ago. I had this item scanned ready to use and got my order mixed up.

July 17, 1989

Bob Gainey retired after 16 seasons with Montreal, to become player/coach of the Epinal Squirrels, a Division Two team in France. He left third all time in Canadiens' games played (1,160).

Now,if I would have been smart (yeah, that'll happen), this would have been posted on July 17th in place of the Paul Gardner photo.

So, as the master of my domain, I make the call to enter this switch and keep my streak going. I don't hear anybody opposing, so motion carries. (And hopefully check things out in the future beforehand)
